CALGARY- With the tax deadline quickly approaching, the BBB is warning people to avoid some common scams.

One of them is tax preparer fraud, which is when an email, flyer or phone call advertises a tax specialist offering a high return for your money, at a reduced rate. Consumers are also warned to watch out for identity theft, which can happen when scammers get your social insurance number, date of birth or credit card information.

The BBB has the following tips, for those looking to hire a professional to do their taxes:

  • Ask questions. Before submitting your personal information, ensure you understand why and how your personal information will be used.
  • Learn about their service terms. Make sure you can contact them year-round in case there are changes or questions about your taxes or information.
  • Check their qualifications. Ask about their background education, knowledge of current tax law and whether they are members of a professional organization such as the  Financial Planning Standards Council. Ask for references and look for customer reviews on their website.
  • Beware of too-good-to-be-true deals. If the tax professional is guaranteeing a high return rate for a minimal fee, it could be a red flag. If it seems too-good-to-be-true, it likely is.
  • Ask how they are paid. Ask if their payment is based on a percentage of the refund amount, rather than the complexity of the tax return.
  • Check with BBB. Check BBB Business Reviews and ratings to help you start your search with trust.

The deadline for Canadians to file taxes is April 30.
