Excessive speeder arrested on Richmond-Delta border

A driver who was going at speeds as high as 180 km/hr on Highway 91 this weekend has been nabbed by police.

The man, who is in his mid twenties, was driving in a white 2012 Mercedes between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. He was going northbound on Highway 91 over the Alex Fraser Bridge and continued into Richmond at speeds of 180 km/hr. He then turned around and headed back east on Highway 91, travelling between 150-160 km/hr toward the bridge.

All this time, he was followed by RCMP’s Air One helicopter.

He was stopped and arrested eastbound on Highway 91 prior to going back over the bridge. His car was impounded for seven days.

Cpl Robert McDonald with E Division Traffic Services says the man is known to police, but he is not a prolific offender. He was found in breach of numerous conditions for a conditional sentence order stemming from a previous incident of unknown nature.

He will appear in court today.

Police say driving at these speeds is unacceptable as it puts both the driver and those around them at risk.

“It is an extremely dangerous speed, any time of day or night or weather conditions,” says McDonald.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Deas Island RCMP at 604-946-2184.
