Calgary addictions centre looks to expand, to meet demand

CALGARY- A local recovery centre is looking to reduce alarming wait times for addiction treatment, by opening a new facility.

Recovery Acres Society has outgrown its current treatment centre in Marda Loop, which can help 38 people at a time. The organization is now trying to raise $13 million to build a new facility on Centre Street North, with room for 50 men.

If approved, it could open by Fall 2015, allowing 40 new spots for women needing treatment in their current building. Currently, some clients wait up to three months for a spot.

“If there’s 40 potential spots here for women hoping to work on their addiction, that means there’s 40 people out of detox or off the streets or out of hospital,” says counsellor Sarah Knopp.

A fundraising concert and gala is scheduled for May 15 at the Jubilee Auditorium.
