Damages from potato farm fire run into the millions

LETHBRIDGE – A southern Alberta man was taken to hospital for burn injuries Wednesday afternoon following an explosion at a farm north of Coaldale.

Fire crews responded to the blaze around 12:30 p.m. on the rural property a few kilometers north of town to find heavy black smoke billowing from the building.

Fire Chief Andy Van Rijn says the explosion occurred when a man was chemically treating product inside the barn.

“He suffered second and third degree burns to his back and head, and he’s very lucky he got out,” he adds.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown and Occupational Health and Safety has been called in to aid in the investigation.
