CALGARY- Ontario has become the latest province to allow alcohol sales in grocery stores, prompting some to wonder if and when Alberta will follow suit.
Liquor will be sold in Ontaio’s major grocery stores by the end of the year, and the government said the move will help support the industry and create jobs.
“It’s convenient for people. People are already going to the liquor stores anyway, so I don’t see any difference,” said one Calgarian, who agrees Alberta should relax liquor laws.
However, regulators in Alberta don’t appear to be budging.
“When we privatized, we used to have just over 200 government-run stores. Now in Alberta we have thirteen hundred privately run liquor stores throughout the province,” explains Jody Korchinski from the Alberta Gaming & Liquor Commission. “So what consumers see in Alberta is great access, great convenience.”
B.C. also allows alcohol sales in grocery stores.
