Long-time BCNU president ousted by members

Long-time B.C. Nurses Union president Debra McPherson is no longer the leader of the 42,000 member union.

McPherson has been defeated by challenger Gayle Duteil in the union’s latest election.

Three weeks of online and telephone voting wrapped up Monday at noon.

McPherson has been active with the BCNU since 1981 and was president from 1990 to 1994 and again from 2000 to 2014.

Under her leadership, the union launched a drive to woo licenced practical nurses away from the Hospital Employees Union, leading to national and provincial trade union sanctions for raiding, but the Labour Relations Board and the courts eventually upheld the campaign.

A note on the BCNU website lists Duteil, vice president Christine Sorensen, treasurer Mabel Tung and two executive councillors, Will Offley and Deb Ducharme, as the newly elected provincial executive council, with full results expected to be posted soon.
