Yellowhead freeway plan floated in new city report

A new city report suggests that closing intersections and removing traffic lights along Yellowhead Trail could help reduce traffic congestion and cut down on collisions.

The proposal would see the high-traffic corridor converted into a six-lane freeway with several new interchanges.

The report suggests closing the following intersections:

*142 Street

*124 Street

*107 Street

*89 Street

*68 Street

*67 Street

According to the report there are currently two sections of Yellowhead Trail that rank in the top 10 of midblock collisions and collision severity.

The estimated cost for the first phase of the project is pegged at $1.35 million.

The report goes before the city’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee next Tuesday.

An executive summary of the Yellowhead Trail Strategic Plan can be found on the City of Edmonton website.
