Snowy spring affecting local businesses

LETHBRIDGE- It was this time last year when southern Albertans were enjoying Spring at around 16 degrees, a real treat considering the winter wonderland we’ve woken up to over the past week.

Now it seems the one thing on everyone’s mind is the forecast, especially businesses that rely heavily on the hot summer months for their profits.

“We normally have a lot of fluctuations this time of year but this is well below normal,” said former meteorologist Elwyn Holmberg. “But if you don’t like the weather just wait 24 hours, it changes.”

Instead of buds, we’re still seeing bare, snow covered trees, and even geese missed the memo- our small signs of Spring are gone overnight.

“Last week was great, we had people on the golf course, we had people all over the range, we had lineups on the driving range,” said Kevin Hamilton of Evergreen Golf Course. “I think people have had enough of the snow.”

Golf, tennis, swimming or just busting out sandals for the first time, we can all agree this winter is dragging on.

“You look at the time when we got the first snowfall and now into March we’re still getting snow at the end of March,” added Holmberg. “It has been a longer winter.”

Though signs of yet another thaw can be seen around the city, it’s just not happening quick enough for most.

“We’ve had a lot of months with no play on the golf course,” said Hamilton.

“It’s been one of those tough winters. I think everyone’s had enough.”

Local golf facilities say they’re biding their time until the snow melts, and hope to be open for the season in early April.
