WINNIPEG – Nearly $1 million was spread out across a table at the RCMP D Division headquarters Monday as police showed off their latest cash seizures under the province’s Criminal Property Forfeiture Act.
The cash was seized during two traffic stops — $735,000 by RCMP during a routine traffic stop in Headingley, Man., just west of Winnipeg, and $225,000 by Winnipeg police found in a truck bed liner, also near Headingley.

Police allege the money was proceeds of crime and referred the cases to the provincial Criminal Property Forfeiture Branch, which applied to the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench to have the money forfeited.
Under provincial law, money that has been illegally obtained or used in illegal activity can be seized and placed in the criminal property forfeiture fund, which then redistributes the cash to law enforcement agencies, community organizations and crime victims.

“These are some of the largest successful forfeitures in the province’s history,” Justice Minister Andrew Swan said in a news release.
More than $7.3 million in assets have been forfeited to the province through criminal property forfeitures since 2010, the province said.
