MONTREAL – To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, a demonstration against Quebec’s proposed charter of values is planned for Friday evening.
The rally is set to begin in front of Mont-Royal metro station at 6 p.m.
“We are marching today to denounce racism in Quebec, which continues to exist and persist, and which has increased in the past year,” said Amy Darwish from the Ensemble contre la Charte xénophobe in a statement.

“Local indigenous and racialized people, as well as their allies, will give speeches and make performances throughout the demonstration,” organizers said in a statement.
“The march is being organized to highlight the fact that colonialism and racism are everyday realities in Quebec, and that the proposed charter of values is one expression of these realities.”
Organized by the “Ensemble contre la Charte xénophobe,” an umbrella group of grassroots Montreal-area organizations, including Solidarity Across Borders and No One is Illegal Montreal, the march has been endorsed by the Association pour une solidarité syndicale étudiante (ASSÉ), the main student associations at both Concordia and McGill universities, as well as community organizations like the South Asian Women’s Community Centre and Climate Justice Montreal.
