Police call off search for B.C. man missing in Nevada

ELKO, Nev. – The search has been called off, for now, for a 59-year-old B.C. man who’s been missing in the Nevada wilderness for almost two months.

Police in Elko County, Nevada, say the hunt for Albert Chretien of Penticton may not resume until snow in the area melts or there’s some new information about his possible location.

Chretien and his 56-year-old wife Rita got lost on a backcountry road in late March while trying to take a shortcut on a trip to Las Vegas.

After their van got stuck, Chretien set out on foot to get help and disappeared, while Rita was rescued after 47 days, having survived on little more than trail mix, candy and melted snow.

She has since returned to Penticton and was released from hospital last weekend.

Searchers on the ground and in the air had been scouring the route Albert Chretien may have taken to seek help, but have not found any trace of him.
