WATCH: Exclusive video of Harlem building explosion

New security camera footage shows the moment a deadly explosion rocked a New York City neighbourhood Wednesday morning.

The footage shows the devastating explosion that destroyed two five-story East Harlem apartment buildings at Park Avenue and 116th Street.

The video, obtained by CBS, was captured on security cameras located across the street from the blast that killed eight people died and injured more than 60 others.

Rescuers say at least five people are still unaccounted for.

The video shows the first signs of disaster appear as the windows on the two buildings suddenly explode, sending glass raining down onto cars below.

A man seen walking on the sidewalk, opposite the two buildings, is nearly knocked off his feet by the blast, ducking his as he is caught up in the flying debris.

As the buildings began to fall, a thick cloud of black smoke is seen pouring into the street.

The fiery blast erupted 15 minutes after a neighbouring resident reported smelling gas.

Investigators spent Friday trying to pinpoint the exact location of the gas leak and determine whether it had anything to do with New York’s aging gas and water mains, some of which date back to the 1800s.
