LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – RCMP and officials at the Fort Whoop-Up historical site in southern Alberta are scratching their heads after someone stole a massive sacred stone.

The Medicine Stone, as the rock is known to local aboriginals, vanished on Wednesday afternoon.

RCMP describe it as "between 600 to 1,000 lbs, rounded in appearance."

Fort Whoop-Up executive director Doran Degenstein says he can’t understand how someone could steal the huge object in broad daylight.

He says someone came in, possibly with a truck and trailer and a loader, and actually scooped the Medicine Stone out of the ground.

The historic stone is a sacred site for the Blackfoot people.
