Toronto police make an arrest in York University shooting

TORONTO – A Toronto man has been arrested in connection to a shooting inside York University that injured two female students last week.

Kemon Edwards, 22, has been identified by Toronto police as the shooter and faces multiple charges, including discharging a firearm and aggravated assault.

A search warrant conducted in the Steeles Avenue West and Jane Street area also resulted in further drug possession offences for the accused.

The arrest is related to an incident on March 6 around 10:30 p.m. when two female students were injured inside the Student Centre after a man walked through the area and fired a gun.

One of the victims was shot in the leg and suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries. The other student was injured from shrapnel. Both are expected to fully recover.

Police believe the two women were not targeted.

The shooting prompted a campus lockdown which was lifted after the police investigation ended later that day.

York University’s President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri issued a statement shortly after the incident which prompted an increase in security patrols and Toronto police presence for the duration of the week.

Three other men and two boys were also arrested in the same search warrant linked to the accused. They also face a long string of drug and gun related charges.
