A crowd of Conservative supporters in the Okanagan-Coquihalla riding packed the Penticton Golf and Country Club Monday night to cheer in their new Member of Parliament, Dan Albas.
This is Albas’s first foray into federal politics; he was formerly a Penticton city councilor.
In his acceptance speech, he was sure to thank his predecessor, popular Conservative MP Stockwell Day, who announced his retirement in March.
With controversy over the candidate nomination process, some people thought the Okanagan-Coquihalla riding may be up for grabs.
Albas himself says he never took the election for granted.
He says he is humbled and grateful for the opportunity to serve residents in the Okanagan-Coquihalla.
The NDP’s David Finnis maintained his party’s second place status in the riding and increased its vote share.
Finnis says he knew it would be a tough riding to win.
He says it was his campaign’s goal to support the national campaign.
