Flames trade Stempniak for third-round pick as trade deadline closes

The trade deadline has come and gone and the Calgary Flames made a pair of trades late in the afternoon.

Flames forward Lee Stempniak and goaltender Reto Berra are on the move.

Stempniak will go to Pittsburgh in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and Berra will head to Colorado and secure the Flames a second-round pick.

Mike Cammalleri was at the centre of pre- trade deadline rumors but GM Brian Burke said he would only make trades that made sense to the organization.

Burke mentioned he might to try re-sign Cammalleri before he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.

The club also announced Wednesday that they will recall forwards Corban Knight, Max Reinhart, Ben Hanowski and goalie Joey MacDonald from the Abbotsford Heat.

The deadline comes just hours before the Flames take on the Ottawa Senators who were busy on trade deadline day.

The Senators acquired Ales Hemsky from the Edmonton Oilers three hours before the deadline closed for a third-round pick in this year’s draft and a fifth-round pick in 2015.
