Formula One action heating up in Montreal

Extreme humidity and brief thunderstorms didn’t stop thousands of car racing fans from getting their fill of Formula One action at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Thursday was “Open House” on Montreal’s Ile Sainte-Helene.

Fans got a chance to watch mechanics prepare for Sunday’s big race.

Some even chatted with drivers.

“This is like an event, it’s something very special,” racing enthusiast Eric Lemieux said.

Driver Mark Webber from the Red Bull Racing Team called Montreal one of his favourite stops on the Grand Prix circuit.

“It’s quite intimate on the island, so the atmosphere is very tight and good,” he told Global Montreal reporter Domenic Fazioli.

There were F1-themed activities across the city.

At amusement park La Ronde, two celebrity drivers tag-teamed to promote a serious message.

Michael Schumacher and Felipe Massa warned all drivers about the dangers of texting and driving.

“You drive a car, you focus on what you do, and not a side action, and for sure, no texting or phoning,” Schumacher told reporters at a news conference.

The seven-time world champion even stepped into simulator to show what can happen when you are distracted behind the wheel.

He crashed after one minute.
