Family of Mark Mariani makes plea for public tips

CALGARY – Police held a Crime Stoppers re-enactment Tuesday morning to help generate tips in a homicide investigation dating back to October of last year.

On Sunday, October 3rd, 2010, 47-year-old Mark Mariani was found dead in a parking lot in the 1500 block of 16th Avenue northwest.

It’s believed Mariani was attacked in an alleyway nearby and his body was later dumped.

Police believe at least three people were involved in his murder. Two are described as Caucasian males between 18 and 22 years old. They were wearing dark clothing at the time. There is no description available for the third suspect.

Police do not yet have a motive in the attack.

“We have several pieces of information that investigators are working through. You mentioned surveillance video, we have some of that. We have other information from the public. This investigation is progressing and it is moving forward,” says S/Sgt. Grant Miller.

Mariani’s family has been working with police to help generate tips. They say they have struggled to understand why their brother was attacked that night.

Emotions were running high during the re-enactment.

“He died for what? It’s senseless that, you know, he would have given the shirt off his back to those people. So please do the right thing and come forward to police with the information that you have,” says Katherin Weltzin, Mark’s sister.

Police also looking for two witnesses who were in the area at the time; Investigators say these two men are not considered suspects but they would like to speak with them.
