Crews battle massive blaze at Sparks egg farm

CALGARY – The leading supplier of fresh farm eggs to Calgary and the surrounding areas lost four of its barns to a massive fire Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze began around 1:00p.m. on Sparks Farm east of Calgary.

All four connected hen barns were destroyed, which housed between 15,000 and 30,000 hens.

Fire crews from Balzac, Langdon and Chesteremere were able to protect the sorting facility.

The farm has approximately 80 employees, all of which got out safely.

It’s not yet known what sparked the fire.

The farm handles approximately 50 percent of Alberta’s egg production, processing eggs from over 80 producers.
