“Burlesque is art” – local group makes its case at council

REGINA – While city council was clearing up some by-law regulations surrounding adult entertainment, a local burlesque group wanted their voices heard on the issue as well.

The city is changing some of its zoning bylaws so strip bars can be only located in industrial areas of the city, after the provincial government ended its longstanding ban on stripping in places that serve alcohol.

However, Regina’s burlesque community is concerned its shows are being lumped in with strip shows.

“It’s mostly our family and friends that come out to our performances, but why should we feel separate from other art groups,” said Bev Gardner with Bottoms Up Burlesque. “We want to feel recognition as an artistic group.”

Council moved to re-visit the issue in three months time.

Currently Bottoms Up doesn’t break the law with its performances, as they only dance in places where no alcohol is served.

Gardner says although it’s certainly not necessary to drink while you watch a performance, they’d like to attract as many people as possible.
