Commonwealth Stadium ticket tax under consideration

City council is discussing the idea of a ticket tax at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium to help finance new seats.

At a meeting on Monday, council heard that $12M should be spent over the next three years to help replace the 60,000 aging plastic seats at the stadium.

A $1.00 or $2.00 charge could be added to Edmonton Eskimo tickets to help cover the costs. For concerts at the stadium, a slightly larger tax could be imposed on tickets, up to $5.00.

Edmonton Eskimo President and CEO Rick Lelacheur says the team is open to the idea, but they haven’t committed to it yet.

"We are looking at it right now and will work with city admin before next week’s council meeting, we’re also conscious of our price points and try to be fan and family friendly, so we are concerned about that price."

Council is expected to vote next week on whether or not to go forward with the purchase of new seats for the facility.
