TORONTO — Coldplay surprised fans Tuesday by posting a video for a brand new song — and it quickly topped a million views.
The video for “Midnight” was directed by Mary Wigmore, godmother to Coldplay singer Chris Martin’s daughter Apple.

Wigmore also appeared in the movie Shallow Hal, starring Martin’s wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
The video uses a night-vision effect as the band’s members roam through a forest.
The song itself suggests a new sound for Coldplay, whose hits include “Yellow” and “Viva la Vida.”

The song will appear on Coldplay’s new album — its first since 2011’s Mylo Xyloto — which is expected later this year.
“Midnight” is also the band’s first release since “Atlas” from the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack.
