CALGARY – Police say the formation of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) has been a big success, with the program taking more than $500 million worth of drugs off the streets since it began operating in 2006.

Insp. Charmaine Bulger, the CEO of ALERT, told a news conference on Friday that ALERT isn’t only making our communities safer for kids, but is putting a big dent in organized crime.

“Drugs are the currency of organized crime and taking that out if their hands and business helps dismantle some of the organized crime that goes on in the province,” said Bulger.

“The most valuable drugs seized in terms of total value have been marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine.”

ALERT recently announced a major heroin seizure at the Calgary International Airport.
