Canada wins gold, silver in women’s ski cross

Watch: Marielle Thompson of Whistler B.C. won the gold medal and Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna B.C. captured the silver in Sochi.

TORONTO – Canada’s Marielle Thompson and Kelsey Serwa won gold and silver Friday in the women’s ski cross event at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park in Sochi.

Thompson of Whistler, B.C. took gold while Serwa of Kelowna, B.C. took silver, and Anna Holmlund of Sweden took home the bronze medal.

Thompson and Serwa were among the medal favourites entering the event, with Thompson winning two World Cup races this season and Serwa collecting a World Cup win on the same course last year.

Georgia Simmerling, also from B.C., crashed out in the quarter-finals, finishing 14th overall.

Freestyle skiing has been a medal haul sport for Canada.

Montreal sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe opened the Games with a  1-2 finish in women’s moguls.

Quecec’s Alex Bilodeau and Mikael Kingsbury  also finished 1-2 in men’s moguls.

This is Canada’s second gold medal in women’s ski cross.  Ashleigh McIvor claimed top spot in the debut of women’s ski cross at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Canada now has 22 medals at the Games – eight gold, 10 silver and four bronze.
