HARD NHL QUESTIONS

In my line of work, asking questions is an integral part of the business (as is coming up with different terms for scoring a goal and wearing makeup).

Sometimes as a reporter, I have to ask “tough” questions, like: If a train leaves from station A at 70 kilometres per hour and another train leaves station B at 60 kilometres per hour, and there’s a distance of 260 kilometres between the two stations, where will the trains intersect? I have no clue, that’s why I like to ask the questions.

In that respect, here are some “tough” questions that are floating around my head as we approach the NHL playoffs.

Why does the Calgary Flames power play suck annually? Follow up: Will Jarome Iginla ever get another top forward to play with before he retires or is traded—other than when he suits up in “Legends of Hockey” games 20 years from now?

Why has Calgary Flames defenceman Jay Bouwmeester never skated in the post-season (including his junior career in Medicine Hat)?

Does Edmonton defenceman Sheldon Souray feel guilty about the money he has stolen from the Oilers this season? And why do none of the women I know seem to care?

Did Oilers Head Coach Pat Quinn really sign up for this?

When was the last time both Alberta NHL teams missed the playoffs? Hint: the last time we had a year number that was a palindrome. Make it 2002.

Why do players continue to get mesmerized by the puck, rather than take the body?

Who wants to play the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs? Nobody? I thought so…

Why has it taken the NHL this long to get serious about head shots? And while we’re at it, why is checking from behind still not an automatic ejection?

Why do TV commercials have to be 400% louder than the programme they accompany?

What is going on in Phoenix? Seriously? Was Wayne Gretzky that bad of a coach? Or, is Dave Tippett really that good? Follow up: Where will they Coyotes be playing, say two years from now? My guess: Not in Glendale...

What in the world was Dallas thinking when the Stars fired Dave Tippett?

Multiple choice: How will the Washington Capitals implode in the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

A) Alexander Ovechkin earning a 7-game suspension for hitting someone from behind

B) Weak goaltending/defence

C) History—the Caps have only ever made one Stanley Cup Finals (1998, yeah Peter Bondra!). The franchise had several strong years in the mid-1980’s, tallying over 100 points after a few regular sesasons, only to flame out in the first or second round

D) Curse of Dale Hunter—the franchise is still paying a karmic debt for an incident in the 1993 playoffs where after Pierre Turgeon scored a series clincher for the New York Islanders—Hunter took him out with one of the cheapest hits from behind in NHL history

Why did the Carolina Hurricanes killing their draft position with a late season surge? Why did Toronto nearly kill Boston’s draft position with this late season surge (the Bruins hold the Maple Leafs’ first round pick thanks to the Phil Kessel trade)?

Why do the Philadelphia Flyers continue to undervalue the goaltending position? Did Flyers brass really think the Ray Emery/Brian Boucher/Michael Leighton trio was good enough? Was Andre Racicot not available? Follow up: Has there ever been a harsher nickname in the league than “Red Light?”

When is the NHL going to figure out a regulation win should be worth more than an overtime/shootout victory?

Is there still a team in Atlanta? Oh, there is? Follow up: Why?

Does anyone else out there yearn for the good ol’ days when there was only an organ (or the odd trumpeter) in hockey arenas? Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-da-dun…CHARGE!

How much are New York Islanders fans longing for the Alexei Yashin years? My guess: -2864%

Who are these guys: Chris Stewart, Matt Moulson, Patrick Hornqvist, and Dustin Penner? Answer: all were on an unlikely pace to score 30 goals this season.

And finally…

With Chicago and San Jose struggling down the stretch is there any way the Vancouver Canucks not make the Stanley Cup Finals from the Western Conference? Am I trying to put the BKOD—Baceda Kiss of Death—on the ‘Nucks? Good question…
