North Shore Rescue is warning of a high avalanche risk on local mountains tonight and in the coming days.
The rescue agency says that “by tomorrow morning, around 50 cm of snow will have fallen on the weak surfaces that were formed during the recent drought.”

This will create a “a very slippery surface on which the new snow is sliding easily.”
The avalanche rating on the treeline is rated as 4- High, which means “very dangerous avalanche conditions, and travel is not recommended in avalanche terrain.”
Below the treeline, the risk is rated 3 – Considerable, which means “dangerous avalanche conditions. Careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route finding and conservative decision making essential.”
A heavy rainfall warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver. The Lower Mainland will get between 20 to 30 mm of rain in about 12 hours, which means lots of snow for the North Shore mountains.
