WINNIPEG — The most outstanding defensive player in the Canadian Football League in 2011 won’t be playing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2014.
Jovon Johnson, who made history as the first defensive back to be chosen as outstanding defensive player, let his social media followers know Monday evening that he wouldn’t be back with the Blue and Gold.
Johnson wrote that he received a voice message informing him that the club had no intention of signing him. Johnson is scheduled to become a free agent Tuesday after playing out his option year of his contract last season.
The post had this message to Bomber fans: “I want to say, ‘thank you to the Winnipeg fans and organization but my time there is done! It’s been a great ride and I wish my teammates from Winnipeg nothing but the best going forward!'”
However Johnson, under his handle @mr_consistent_1 added, “thanks for all the great memories and friendships but now we must face one another! I look forward to my return to Winnipeg in 2014 just know that!!”

Johnson joined the Bombers in 2008 after playing nine games with the Saskatchewan Roughriders the year previous. While with the Bombers Johnson intercepted 23 passes. Eight of which were during the 2011 season in which he helped the Bombers reach the Grey Cup.
Johnson was also a threat as a kick returner with three touchdowns while setting up the offense in scoring position on numerous occasions.
