GLENHOLME, N.S. – RCMP continue to remain on the scene of a barricaded man in Colchester County.

Police received a call at approximately 8:30 a.m. Sunday about a man threatening to harm himself. The incident is based at a residence on Highway 2 in Glenholme.

Cpl. Scott MacRae with the Nova Scotia RCMP said the call came from a witness.

When police arrived and tried to speak with the 44-year-old man, he barricaded himself inside a residence and threatened to shoot at police.

Police believe the man is armed and have warned the public to stay away from the area.

“[It is] a very dangerous situation perceived by officers here in Glenholme,” MacRae said.

“We did have to evacuate some residents. Fortunately there was not a lot of homes in the area, just under a dozen people were asked to leave the area until we can resolve this matter.”

A section of Highway 2 near Highway 4 has been contained and traffic is being rerouted.

MacRae said a negotiator has been called to the scene to attempt to make contact with the man.

“The goal is obviously to do this in a peaceful manner, resolve it without any violence and hopefully bring it to a peaceful end,” he said.

MacRae said police are confident the man is alone in the residence and notes that it is a rapidly changing situation.

“It’s a difficult situation for police anytime we have these situations where a firearm may be involved. Public safety is paramount but also the safety of the officers. The end goal is to resolve this with everybody being safe.”
