City unveils plans for network of downtown cycle tracks

CALGARY – The City of Calgary has unveiled their plans for several downtown cycle tracks which will eventually connect to form a large cycle network through the downtown core.

Cycle tracks are on-street bike lanes separated by physical barriers, such as the 7 Street S.W. cycle track which opened in July 2013.

In fact, officials say the Centre City cycle track project will connect to the 7 Street cycle track. The network will join the Elbow River and Bow River pathways, and will offer cyclists the option of travelling through the City Centre, from end to end.

Seven streets and avenues were chosen for the cycle track:

  • 8 Avenue SW (Stephen Avenue)
  • 9 Avenue SE at 1 Street SE
  • 12 Avenue SW at 14 Street SW
  • 1 Street SE at Riverfront Avenue
  • 5 Street SW from Riverfront Avenue to 17 Avenue SW
  • 7 Street SW from Riverfront Avenue to 8 Avenue SW
  • 8 Street SW between 8 Avenue SW and 17 Ave SW

Officials say avenues and streets selected for the cycle track network will be redesigned, which may impact traffic lanes and on-street parking – adding that some on-street parking may need to be relocated, or removed.
