Manitoba’s Attorney General Andrew Swan announced Friday morning a one-year extension of the province’s electronic monitoring pilot project.
"Electronic monitoring is one of the tools we have used in a strategy that has helped reduce auto theft by nearly 80 per cent since 2004," Swan said in a recent news release.
57 “level four” auto thieves have been outfitted with electronic monitoring devices since the project was introduced in 2008. The electronic monitoring is supposed to help authorities quickly locate and deal with offenders who are in breach of their court-ordered conditions.
Swan added that they are waiting for an independent review of the electronic monitoring program, which is due within the year, so they can decide in the pilot program will be made permanent. Swan added that the review should have been complete by now, and that he was given no reason for the delay. The annual cost for program is $300,000.
