Lower Sackville man badly burned while making hash oil

HALIFAX – A Halifax-area man severely burned in an explosion at his home on Saturday remains in critical condition in hospital.

RCMP say the explosion occurred while the 40-year-old homeowner, whose name they have not released, was allegedly cooking hash oil in his basement.

Police spokesman Cpl. Scott MacRae says investigators will be looking into whether the activities were illegal.

The victim has a permit to use medical marijuana, but police say that doesn’t include permission to make hash oil.

Police say they were called to a brick bungalow in Lower Sackville when a man stumbled out of the building severely burned and wearing nothing but shorts.

Investigators say it appears the blast was triggered by isopropyl alcohol, a clear, colourless flammable liquid.
