EDMONTON – Police are investigating a carjacking in central Edmonton.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says a 45-year-old woman was sitting in her car in a parking lot near 106 Avenue and 102 Street around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night, when she was approached by three men. Police say the woman was pulled from the vehicle and thrown to the ground. The men then reportedly drove away in the car – a grey, 2006 Ford Freestyle with a license plate HUX 341.

The woman wasn’t injured, and it’s believed she didn’t know the men.

Police are searching for the vehicle and the suspects.

The three men are believed to be in their twenties, but their faces were hidden behind scarves.

The incident is the second violent carjacking in three days, but police say the two are not believed to be related.

“We see a lot of stolen vehicles throughout the year, but very few carjackings,” says Downtown Division Acting Staff Sgt. Michael Hickey. “When a life is put at risk during the process of a crime, the stakes increase dramatically, and the criminal consequence jumps from theft to robbery.”

On Tuesday, a vehicle was carjacked in west Edmonton by a suspect after he allegedly pointed a gun at a woman and her seven-year-old daughter in an attempt to rob them.

The mother was reportedly assaulted.

The stolen vehicle was found in the city’s north east end Thursday morning and has been seized for forensics testing.

Police are still searching for the suspect who’s described as Caucasian or Aboriginal, in his late twenties, with short brown hair and facial hair, and between 5’8″ and 5’10” tall.
