Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has issued an open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, urging him to engage in a one-on-one debate.

On Friday morning Ignatieff tweeted,

“It’s not too late to change your mind, Mr. Harper. Here’s my letter: http://lpc.ca/oqc“

The idea of the debate arose on Wednesday when Harper proposed a head-to-head televised debate with Ignatieff. The Grit leader responded, “Any time. Any place.”

The two leaders exchanged in a brief Twitter back-and-forth, with NDP leader Jack Layton and Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe tweeting their condemnation of the debate.

On Thursday Harper said he was not interested in multiple debates. Ignatieff accused Harper of backing out of the one-on-one debate, reiterating that he is still willing to duke it out with the Prime Minister.

Harper’s Twitter account has since gone silent on the issue, but Ignatieff continues to press the issue, saying that Canadians want to see the debate in addition to the scheduled leader debates.
