Halifax Regional Police say they have found “no evidence of a bomb” after Saint Mary’s University was evacuated Tuesday afternoon, and nearby streets were shut down, in response to threats.
Police said they were contacted by the university’s security team at around noon after it received a bomb threat.
“Police assisted with the evacuation of campus, including the University’s residences. Nearby streets were closed, and a sweep of the school was conducted by officers and the K9 Unit,” Halifax police said in a release at 3:45 p.m.
“No bomb or other suspicious materials were located during the search.”
The campus and streets were re-opened around 3 p.m.
Similar threats at Dalhousie University
In an alert message to its community, Dalhousie University said it received “threatening spam emails” to at least two offices at the university, which is located in the same area as Saint Mary’s University.
“The matter was reported to police at the time,” the alert reads. “It was learned that similar correspondence was sent to other institutions as well.”
The alert goes on to say that Dalhousie’s campus security, as well as its internal cyber-security resources, determined that evacuation was not required.
Halifax Regional Police said the investigations into both threats are ongoing.
