Saskatoon near top of Canadian cities fighting climate change: WWF

Saskatoon has ranked fourth in the World Wildlife World Wildlife Fund’s first-ever Earth Hour List of Canadian cities taking action on climate change.

In the rankings released Monday, cities were scored out of 10 points based on a long list of specific, climate change-related indicators like greenhouse gas emission reduction, green building and green transportation.

Vancouver, which Mayor Gregor Robertson wants to turn into the Greenest City in the world by 2020, was well ahead of the competition on the WWF’s list with 8.1 points while Toronto was second with 7.2. Montreal was third with 6.2 points while Victoria was in a tie for fourth with Saskatoon at 5.7.

The WWF recognized Saskatoon for installing 90 solar thermal panels to heat city pools; installing a target to reduce community emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels by 2013; adding eight diesel-electric hybrid buses; and the proposed green energy park at the landfill, which will include a wind turbine, landfill gas power generation, and other alternative energy projects.

Josh Laughren, the WWF’s director of climate and energy, said the intent of the list was to focus attention on this Saturday’s Earth Hour initiative when a billion people around the world are expected to turn off their lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. to reduce power needs.

"We really wanted to bring more attention to solutions for climate change," said Laughren.
