Barter sentence to be determined Tuesday

A Vernon man who was found not criminally responsible for the murder of his friend will find out how long he has to stay in a mental health facility.

Kenneth Barter, 37, admitted to killing his friend Nathan Mayrhofer in August 2010.

Barter was off his medication for schizophrenia when he thought Mayrhofer was trying to hypnotize him.

The Vernon man used a hammer to kill the 32-year-old, then dismembered his body and placed it in the fridge and freezer. Barter then told his family what he had done.

The BC Review Board, an independent tribunal established under the Criminal Code of Canada, is making the decision on Barter’s fate in a mental health institution.

Barter will appear before the Board in Port Coquitlam Tuesday.
