It seems Nova Scotia’s first snow storm of the season is going to hit right before the Christmas holidays.

Total snowfall amounts are expected to be between 15 to 30 cm.

Environment Canada has now issued snowfall warnings covering the entire province except for Cape Breton Island.

The snow is expected to begin Friday night and persist into Saturday afternoon.

“The snow will change to ice pellets along the Eastern Shore Saturday morning. Gusty northeast winds accompanying the snow may cause reduced visibility at times in blowing snow,” the warnings states.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”

Global News meteorologist Ross Hull said there is still time to prepare.

“The storm is going to move in late tonight (Friday), likely after midnight or just around midnight into Saturday morning,” said Global News meteorologist Ross Hull on Friday morning.

“So no worries about it today. If you want to go out and get those storm chips or whatever you want to do as you batten down the hatches tomorrow.”

He said temperatures will be below the freezing mark and there will be strong northeasterly winds.

“At this point, it looks like it will be snow for the hour, but a little more chance of some mixing around eastern Nova Scotia, especially around Cape Breton,” he said.

“The heavy snow should ease by mid-afternoon tomorrow. We’re still in in some breezy conditions, though, and that snow will blow around.”

He adds while temperatures will rise towards Christmas Day, it will stay below freezing, so the snow will “stick around” and give Nova Scotians a white Christmas.
