CALGARY- Tips have been pouring in to investigators, ever since word emerged that two animals were found dead with their mouths taped shut in a southeast alley.
A dead cat was found in Willow Park on Thursday, while Global News crews were investigating a similar discovery of an emaciated dog. The alley is just steps away from a playground.
“A dog gives you undying love, he don’t deserve that,” said Johnny Wutzke, who discovered the dog behind his garage. “I seen that dog and his owner walking in that park last fall…it upsets me something terrible.”

While those who live in the area continue to go about their everyday lives, flowers now mark the spot where the cat was found. The details of the case have so upset people around the city, that thousands of dollars have poured in to match a $5,000 donation by a vet in hopes it leads to an arrest.
“These stories have the ability to pull a visceral emotional response unlike anything else,” says Greg Habstritt from Vets to Go. “This is pure and outright evil. This is someone overtly and actively trying to hurt animals. This didn’t happen overnight. To get in that condition it would take many days, maybe weeks. Whether it died of starvation or dehydration, it’s an awful way to die.”
There are also concerns about who would be capable of such a thing, and those who study criminal behavior agree there is a link between animal abuse and violence towards humans.
“Who is that individual who can sit and stand listening to the pain and suffering of animals starving to death?” says Janne Holmgren from the MRU department of justice studies. “We ought to be concerned about such an individual going to that extent.”
So far, donations for a reward have reached nearly $10-thousand dollars. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Humane Society.
