CALGARY – Alberta’s health minister says 3,200 more surgeries to remove cataracts will be done between now and the end of March.
Gene Zwozdesky says the goal is to reduce wait lists.
“Combined with prior blitzes, we have significantly increased the number of cataract procedures done in Alberta this year,” said Zwozdesky in a press release.
The additional surgeries are to be performed in Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Grande Prairie.
Zwozdesky says the cost of the additional surgeries is about $1.6 million and will be covered by the existing health budget.
About 30,000 cataract procedures are expected to be done in the province this year.
