TORONTO – A video rant by a retiring TTC employee is getting a lot of attention online after portraying a seemingly thoughtless workplace.

The video begins with Ron Mitchell, a TTC employee retiring after 31 years on the job, filming an empty lounge.

“Well after 31 at TTC, this is my retirement party. This is my last day on the job and there’s not a soul here, absolutely nobody,” he said.

He swings the camera around the room and takes the viewer for a tour of a completely empty facility, complaining that “management don’t give a crap about you, the union don’t give a crap about you.

“Here I am all by myself, at work, wondering where everybody is,” he said.

So what happened? TTC spokesperson Brad Ross says there was “miscommunication.”

“It’s unfortunate there was some miscommunication over the holiday period with Mr. Mitchell and his manager and the work hours are kind of odd over at Greenwood and it fell through the cracks and it shouldn’t have and it shouldn’t have. We’re trying to make it right,” he said.

And the public transit agency doesn’t have a set policy to celebrate retirements. Instead, it’s done with the in consultation with the individual retiring and varies depending on the department.

“These retirements parties, these receptions are really ad-hoc and vary by department and whether they want to do them,” he said. “It’s not to say that we don’t value 30 plus years of service, we absolutely value 30 plus years of service of working for the people of Toronto and the TTC and its very regrettable that this happened he feels that way.”
