Ice jams clog N.B. rivers, cause more flooding concerns

FREDERICTON – An ice jam has clogged the Nashwaak River in Durham Bridge as a result of the extended January thaw in New Brunswick.

Pamela Miller, who works at a special care home that sits along the riverbank, said the rising water level makes her nervous.

“We really hate warm weather in January,” she said. “We really do.”

The water levels are also rising dangerously close to people’s homes in Nashwaak Village.

Miller, who has been working in the area for 10 years, said ice jams this early in winter are unusual.

“I did see it once before…where the ice was standing straight up and that was in January, too,” she said.

The ice jam in the Nashwaak River is just one of several causing flooding concerns throughout the province.

Officials from the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization say they are closely monitoring water levels.

While there has not yet been any reports of flooded homes, some roads have been washed out, including the one in Upper Durham where Miller lives.

However, she said she’s not worried about her home, which is on higher ground.

As for the water inching closer to her workplace, she’s prepared for the worst.

“We have everybody packed and ready to go if something does happen,” she said.
