Cell phone distraction leads to head-on crash

It was just a quick glimpse of a cell phone, but it was enough of a distraction to cause a head-on collision in Kelowna Friday morning.

Debris littered Sexsmith Road near Longhill Road after a female driver veered into oncoming traffic and hit a truck head-on.

Police say the woman’s cell phone rang and she looked down at it but did not pick it up.

However, they say it was enough to distract her and send her into the wrong lane.

“The cell phone rang,” said Constable Lise Marion of the Kelowna RCMP. “We all have voicemail. Let it go to voicemail when you’re driving the car…because a momentary lapse like this ended up in a car crash.”

Both drivers were taken to Kelowna General Hospital for minor injuries.

The distracted driver will receive a ticket for failure to stay in the proper lane and failure to keep to the right.
