WINNIPEG — A Prairie storm is sweeping into Manitoba with snowfall and wind warnings.

The storm system will be accompanied by heavy snow, blowing snow, strong winds and freezing rain.

Wind warnings have been issued for Brandon, Carberry, Treherne, Virden, Souris, Melita, Boissevain, Turtle Mountain Provincial Park, Killarney, Pilot Mound, Manitou, Dauphin, Roblin, Winnipegosis, Minnedosa, Neepawa, Russell, Riding Mountain National Park, Ste. Rose, McCreary, Alonsa and Gladstone, Man.

Strong westerly winds gusting to 90 kilometres per hour are expected later Wednesday as an intense storm developing in northern Saskatchewan races southeastward to reach northwestern Ontario by midnight, Environment Canada warned. Wind speeds of 90 km/h or more are considered damaging winds.

In Winnipeg and the rest of the Red River Valley, winds are forecast to be 50 to 70 kilometres per hour.

Winnipeg’s snowfall forecast has been reduced. Totals will vary because of the wind but we can count on at least five centimetres. Heavier snow will fall north and east of the city. Gimli and Pinawa could see closer to 10 cm Wednesday.

Winds out of the south will bring temperatures close to and above 0 C. Freezing rain is a possibility as far north as The Pas. The areas at risk of receiving freezing rain are west of Lake Manitoba and across the south. For the southwest, it is most likely late in the morning, while it could arrive in Winnipeg in the afternoon.

Blowing snow is expected to continue through Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
