CES 2014 is the launching pad for cool consumer technology

Morning folks, another mega CES 2014 show in Las Vegas is over but its effects will be felt by all us consumers for the whole year and beyond. I will certainly be talking about various aspects of the show throughout the year, as new products start showing up in stores.

For now, here are a few interesting tech items I ran into.

The LG G Flex 6-inch OLED screen smartphone is joining a popular new size, nicknamed phablet, combining smartphone and tablet duties but with unique and industry-firsts. Its screen is curved but the whole phone flexes with pressure, say, in your pocket and the back surface is self-healing. Available later this year. http://www.lg.com/ca_en

-The INMOTION SCV from at CES 2014 was easy and fun to ride. For less than $2,500 it weighs only 15.5 kg (35 lb) can be taken anywhere by its convenient handle. The LED display shows and talks to let you know when it’s ready to mount, one foot at a time, even warns you when you are going too fast (max 15 kmph – 9 mph). It turns on a dime, will get you 16 to 30 km or 10 to 18 miles on one full charge. It works with a mobile app for GPS tracking, remote control features, instant data viewing via WiFi and Bluetooth. Available now.

-If you have trouble keeping track of your growing number of passwords, eyeLock might have the right answer. Its USB powered portable iris reader allows you to log in to any of your password-set sites. It still is in development and don’t be surprised if it’s built-in in your next phone, tablet or notebook. www.eyelock.com.
