Hundreds of Canadians flocked to Banff on Saturday to wish our Olympic athletes luck ahead of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The city hosted a block party in honour of the athletes, who will be leaving for Sochi, Russia in the coming weeks.

About 40 Olympic athletes were in Banff for the event, including members of the Canadian women’s hockey team and the men and women’s curling teams.

There were also about 20 athletes who competed in previous Olympic Games.

Whether they are first-timers or veterans competitors, Canada’s athletes all agree that the support from the public has been overwhelming.

“We know everybody back home is behind us and cheering for us all the way and we certainly feel that support here in Banff,” Hayley Wickenheiser told Global News on Saturday

“It’s amazing being here in Banff for this block party,” her teammate Meaghan Mikkelson agreed. “You know with Sochi right around the corner we couldn’t hope for a better send-off. We’re pumped and ready to go.”

Saturday’s event also featured performances from The Sheepdogs and The Arkells.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games begin February 7th in Sochi, Russia.

Calgary will host another block party for the athletes once they return home after the games.
