Turcotte to appeal retrial verdict at Supreme Court of Canada

MONTREAL – A new trial date was expected to be set on Friday for the former cardiologist Guy Turcotte, who is facing two counts of first degree murder.

But Turcotte’s lawyer announced in the St Jerome courthouse Friday morning that he is taking his case to the Supreme Court of Canada in an effort to overturn Quebec Court of Appeal retrial decision.

In a controversial verdict in 2011, Turcotte was found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder for the shocking 2009 stabbing deaths of his two young children.

The Quebec Court of Appeal tossed out the verdict and ordered a new trial in November 2013.
