Watch: SFU to build a multi-million-dollar observatory

Astronomy buffs will soon have another place where they can gaze at the stars.

A new astronomical observatory is being built at SFU’s Burnaby campus. But it will also be available for use off campus by some very young, budding astronomers.

The Trottier observatory will feature a dome, which will house a reflector telescope that can track galaxies billions of years old.

The observatory — which will cost 4.4 million dollars — is expected to be completed by August.

It is being funded by the Trottier foundation, headed by Montreal philanthropists Lorne and Louise Trottier.

As university telescopes go, SFU’s will be slightly larger than most, capable of seeing other galaxies.

But what sets this project apart more than anything else is its ability to push the final frontier from the Burnaby campus to anywhere in B.C., this observatory is on line — there for any student in the province.
