VANCOUVER – A 17-year-old boy has been killed in a pedestrian accident in the city’s east side Thursday.
The teen was crossing Nanaimo at Hastings, heading east on the south side of the street at approximately 8:25 a.m., when he was hit by a dump truck that was turning right from Hastings.
Emergency crews converged on the scene, but the boy was killed instantly.
"This is a complete tragedy that has affected everyone involved," said Vancouver police Const. Jana McGuinness. "Even seasoned officers have found this to be a very tragic and unsettling incident.”
Police said the teen went to school in the area. They are trying to contact his family, who lives overseas.
McGuinness said the driver has been "extremely traumatized" by the collision and is co-operating with police.
Traffic was diverted on Nanaimo midday Thursday, but Hastings was open.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact VPD crash investigators at 604-717-3012.
