TORONTO — Former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken is considering a run for U.S. congress, according to a report in the Washington Blade.

The 35-year-old singer is said to be interested in representing North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district.

The Blade cited anonymous sources in reporting that Aiken has consulted with Democratic Party insiders in Washington, D.C. and recently met with pollsters.

Neither Aiken nor the a representative of the Democractic Congressional Campaign Committee responded to the Blade‘s requests for comment.

The seat Aiken is seeking is currently occupied by Republican Renee Ellmers.

The deadline to file for the May 6 primary is Feb. 28.

Aiken placed second on Idol in 2003 and went on to become a recording artist and Broadway performer. He came out as gay in 2008 after welcoming son Parker (whose biological mother is Jaymes Foster, sister of Canadian music producer David Foster).
