Police said the stabbing happened near Lower Sherbourne and The Esplanade at around 8 p.m. on Monday.

Investigators said there was an altercation between a passenger and the taxi driver.

Beck Taxi’s Operations Manager Kristine Hubbard told Global News the driver was stabbed multiple times, including in the head, and is recovering in hospital.

Hubbard added that two passengers initially got into the cab and “appeared to be in a rush.” They allegedly demanded the driver speed but the driver refused, Hubbard said.

She said the vehicle behind the taxi called police.

In a later update, police said the suspect was arrested. Roads in the area were closed but have since reopened.
